New challenges-distance teaching and learning .

Time of the pandemic, time of remote work. Our school has seamlessly switched  to online teaching. Many thanks to our son Bartosz for his willingness to help in solving any technical problems. On March 16, we started our lessons using Hangouts. Students had to learn a new type of collaboration , turn the microphone on / off within a certain time, be patient when everyone would like to answer, report willingness to answer differently than in classroom not by raising a hand but by saying the  name and dealing with imperfections in computer equipment. This  change showed  that not all the children had access to a computer. To diminish  confusion among students we  had to support kids with lessons through  mobile phones . As time passed, both students and their parents  began to deal with new responsibilities better and better. Right in the beginning the students saw that learning phonetic signs was worth doing. This skill was especially useful during some interference due to the internet problems.  ...

Family meeting

At the end of a school year students used to get their certificates, meet with their teachers or even  bring parents along to celebrate the results of learning. Nowadays, with all the bans that limit social life we had to organize a meeting online. We usually begin every lesson with spontaneous talking about the time between lessons so the family meeting began likewise. Parents could see and hear how their children use  grammar structures and  vocabulary. They could hear their pronunciation and measure fluency and skills of communicating in English  in  front of the group . Short contests proved the knowledge of vocabulary. We chose words, which students had learnt during the lesson about birds. Next, students had to use the right word in fill the gap task. Parents were encouraged to cooperate with their children. We set time limit to finish the task and we asked the parents to judge the results. Below is a short  fill the gaps task. When a car moves very fast and a driver wants to stop it , we can hear_____of brakes. It happens during football matches that supporters ____ at the referee. When we have a sore throat, we____ it with salt water. KEY : screech , jeer ,gurgle   Later, there were three excerpts from videos and our contestants were asked to use the appropriate word to name the sound they heard in the films. A ________________ 00:59-1:43 min.      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmLSvW76Hpo B _____________ 0:00min- 0:16 min.       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQcvlyjcaPM C ____________ 00:00- 00:10 min.      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTdngv_g2p0 KEY: A /CHATTER    B / WHISTLE    C /GURGLE  Then there was a longer( 48 sentences) task based precisely on one of our lessons. This one was too long to do during the family meeting, so students chose sentences randomly and the winner was a student ready to use an appropriate word. ETEGAMI-a Japanese postcard.

Art of etegami is well known in our school.   .  Both our students and participants of summer or winter have learnt how to create it. A representative of our school is a member of an internationa l ETEGAMI FAN CLUB, which is managed from Japan by Deborah Davidson . Etegami doesn`t only mean  art of painting a postcard. This is the way of communicating . An artist creates a postcard , adds words and sends etegami to a recipent. Etegami motto says : ‘Clumsy is beautiful’. The most important thing is willingness to create a postcard for a catcher .   The idea is to draw or paint spontaneously without any sketching in pencil or improvements. Blotches , diverse thickness of outline or blurring adds personal character. There are some rules about creating etegami. Among them is the way a brush is hold . Mother`s Day

Our school has always helped the students prepare a surprise gift  for their mothers to celebrate Mother`s day. After our Jay`s lessons students knew how stunning are blue and black patterned  jay`s feather. Students had been  sent a scan with a jay`s design. They had printed and cut out the little  feathers. All painting stuff had to be prepared as we they going to design and create a piece of jewellery for their mothers. When everything for the art lesson was prepared, we were ready to begin making a necklace . To inspire the students a few projects made by a teacher were shown. A teacher demonstrated every step of the process and students followed him doing their best. It wasn`t easy to mimic teacher`s steps through the Internet, seeing them only on the screen of a computer or on the little mobile phone display board. The necklace had to be served  in a nice way. Students fixed their  gifts  onto a sheet of carton and they  added words of wishes for their mums. Below there are pictures of Kasia`s and Janek`s  artwork. made by Kasia made by Janek made by...

Studying new words from context.

Learning vocabulary from  context is the most effective method. In our previous lesson we learned about the bird JAY. We needed to introduce new words to talk about its appearance, food preferences, abilities or sounds the bird makes. During consecutive lessons we drew connections between new words and previous knowledge. We built sentences with new words talking about different aspects of life. We wrote Polish and English to make pairs of sentences. We cut out the sentences, mixed them and later matched Polish sentences with English ones. The sentences about the JAY were written in green colour. Below there is a set of these sentences(48). 1.A teacher to students : „ Please do not make so much noise during a break.
